The Great Apostrophe Catastrophe

You’ve seen them. I’ve seen them. They’re everywhere: apostrophes popping up where they don’t belong, like dandelions in a manicured lawn.

Walk into a grocery store and the signs cry out:

  • Banana’s $0.59/lb
  • Apple’s on Sale
  • Potato’s Half Off

Somewhere, a proofreader sighs.

What’s Really Going On?

The poor apostrophe is one of the most misunderstood marks in English. It has two main jobs:

  1. To show possession (Josie’s pen, the cat’s whiskers)
  2. To form contractions (don’t, you’re, it’s)

That’s it. That’s the whole résumé.

What the apostrophe does not do:

  • Make a word plural (bananas, not_banana’s_)
  • Decorate a sign (Sale’s Today!)
  • Randomly appear because someone thought, “Why not?”

Why Does It Matter?

Sure, we all “know what they meant,” but misused punctuation can make writing look sloppy — and it can distract from the message. If you’re selling the world’s best apples, don’t let a rogue apostrophe steal the spotlight.

A Quick Cheat Sheet

  • Possession: The dog’s toy (the toy of the dog)
  • Contraction: It’s raining (short for it is)
  • Plural: The dogs barked (no apostrophe needed!)

Let’s Laugh About It (So We Don’t Cry)

One of my favorite real-life sightings: “CD’s, Video’s, and DVD’s for Sale.”
That poor sign was practically tripping over apostrophes.

But the good news is, these little blunders keep proofreaders like me happily busy.

In Closing

The apostrophe isn’t the enemy — it just needs a little guidance. Used wisely, it adds clarity and polish. Used wildly… well, at least it gives us something to chuckle about.

So the next time you see banana’s, give a silent nod to proofreaders everywhere. We’re out here, gently rescuing apostrophes from grocery stores, menus, and newsletters — one misplaced mark at a time.
